Appeals

Appealing an eligibility decision

If you do not agree with the eligibility decision regarding your ability to use Calgary Transit buses and CTrains, you may appeal the decision within 60 days of receiving it.

(Please note that decisions made for safety reasons, such as mandatory personal care attendant (MPCA) requirements or handover-to-caregiver requirements, cannot be appealed).

There are two stages in the appeal process:

Stage One: Functional assessment, letter, or Travel Training

If you would like to appeal the eligibility decision, please email calgarytransitaccesseligibility@calgary.ca  or call 403-537-7777 and press 5. Let us know that you would like to appeal the decision, and our staff will explain the next required step.

  • If you have not completed a functional assessment recently, we will schedule one at our Westbrook location. This assessment takes approximately 90 minutes and is completed outdoors. Please dress for the weather and bring the mobility aid you use most often. During the assessment, you can explain why you disagree with the eligibility decision to an Eligibility Specialist and provide any new medical information that has not already been submitted.
  • If you have completed a functional assessment recently, we will ask you to provide a letter explaining why you disagree with the decision and to submit any additional medical information that has not already been provided.
  • In some cases, one of our Travel Trainers may meet with you to assess your ability to use Calgary Transit.

Once one of the above steps has been completed, the Team Lead of Eligibility will review all information, including eligibility records, assessment results, travel training results, and any additional information provided. You will receive a decision in writing.

If your eligibility decision remains unchanged, you may proceed to the second and final stage of the appeal process.

Stage Two: Appear before the Eligibility Appeal Board

If the eligibility decision remains unchanged after Stage One, you may proceed to the second stage of appeal and present your case to the Calgary Transit Access Eligibility Services Appeal Board.

The Appeal Board meets monthly, is made up of volunteer members appointed by City Council, and operates independently of Calgary Transit Access.

To have your appeal heard, please submit the Stage Two Appeal Form to Calgary Transit Access. This form will be sent to you with your Stage One decision letter. Your Stage One decision letter will indicate the deadline for submitting the completed form to proceed to Stage Two.

You may attend the appeal hearing in person or choose to have your appeal considered based on the information you have provided in your absence.

The decision made by the Appeal Board is final and binding.

If you have any questions, please contact Calgary Transit Access Eligibility at 403-537-7777 then press 5.
